SAGO PALM BLACK RACER II

FINAL ROUND - Am proud to share this photo made the final round of judging for the Wildlife Photographer of the Year contest. It was one of 6,000 images selected out of over 60,000. I'm always away shooting in other locations, but happened to come home and my husband pointed out this beautiful Black Racer snake taking up residence in one of our Sago Palms at our home on St. Simons Island, Georgia. As it was November and the temperatures were starting to get cooler, the snake was using the palm bloom as a warming spot. The large female bloom of this particular Sago Palm had been providing natural cover for geckos and now this snake. The palm leaves were difficult to shoot through and I didn't want to scare the snake so I stayed a safe distance and used an 800mm lens. I loved how the snake was just propping its head against a bloom shoot and how the photo captured the creamy nature of the greenery surrounding the snake.
